Monochrome

I don't often set out to take photographs in monochrome because it involves a different way of seeing – or of showing – the subject.

Mono' has a fascinatingly reductive quality: removing the distraction which the familiarilty of colour sometimes creates allows the image to speak more directly. In terms of story-telling, monochrome (or for that matter duotones) can be to colour what newsprint is to a four-colour magazine.
